Throughout his medical career, which has taken him from his hometown of St. Louis to the southern and western states, Dr. Hasik has delivered over 5,000 babies.  Dr. Hasik comes to HMH in cooperation with CCMH to provide not only an OB-GYN outpatient clinic but also gynecology surgical services.
“My practice is a general OB-GYN practice, but I have always had special interests”, noted Dr. Hasik. “I am certified in hysteroscopy and laparoscopy, both minimally invasive approaches to gynecology surgery.” Dr. Hasik’s surgical services will include performing all the noninvasive approaches to hysterectomy, removal of ovaries, and the medical and surgical treatment of female urinary incontinence.

Horn Memorial Hosts an “Experience Health!” Day

Rebecca Burns, RN, BSN, Inpatient Director demonstrates how to administer an injection

Horn Memorial Hospital and Northwest Iowa Area Health Education Center (NWI AHEC) partnered to present the annual “Experience Health” occupation exploration day on November 15th, 2012 at Horn Memorial Hospital.  Micki Paulsen, NWI AHEC recruitment coordinator and Jo Hayes, nursing director at Horn Memorial Hospital, worked together to coordinate the event.  Students from OA-BCIG, River Valley and Ridgeview Schools, attended an eight hour activity packed day at the Horn Memorial Hospital to explore a multitude of different careers available to students in healthcare.  Various local healthcare professionals were involved to extend knowledge of their chosen occupation and the benefits of working in a rural hospital or health environment.

Adult participant experts of all areas of health/hospital services were present to address students’ questions and inquiries of future occupation choices.  In the full day of activities, healthcare professionals and students involved themselves in various hands-on activities and discussions including the following topics:
What happens in your department in this facility?  What do you do during the day?
How to choose a health career area to study?
            What education is required?
How to prepare in high school for college curriculum?
What are the best and the least interesting parts of this occupation?

Students rotated through the Emergency Room, Ambulance, Occupational Therapy, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Surgery, Physical Therapy, Radiology, Nursing and Public Health, Home Health and Hospice where they engaged in hands-on activities.  Some of the activities included: intubation of a mannequin, giving a health assessment of a “patient”, injections and BP checks, sterile environment and gowning, use of splints in OT, viewing unique X-Rays and CT Scans and some super lab activities of drawing blood on a “fake arm”, urine analysis and other exciting hands-on lab activities.

The mission of Northwest Iowa Area Health Education Center is to “grow our own” quality healthcare workforce.  The intent is to recruit youth into healthcare professions, assist youth with pre-professional training, and then provide continuing education to retain professionals in rural

communities.  Northwest Iowa Area Health Education Center strives to establish partnerships with local professionals and healthcare facilities to coordinate opportunities like “Experience Health” days for area youth.  NWI AHEC programs provide opportunities for student exploration of the multitude of occupational opportunities in the healthcare field.

Some quotes from the student who participated in the “Health Experience!” event at Horn Memorial Hospital are below:

·         “It was AWESOME!”
·         “You learn about what types of things you could do in the medical field and you learn which one would fit you the most.”
·         “Helped with deciding where to go for schooling.”
·         “It helped me see that there are many options.”
·         “It really helped me understand what some occupations were about.”
·         “I find at smaller hospitals, the people are nicer and more pleasant.”
·         “It puts a lot of things into perspective.”
·         “It gives good information to help decide if you’re right for the medical field.”
·          “Very informational, loved the hands on.”

Horn Hospice Recognizes National Hospice Month

No one likes to think about death and dying, but it’s something everyone has to face eventually.  There’s an incredible resource in our community that provides comfort, dignity and respect to all those coping with a serious or life-limiting illness. It’s Horn Hospice.

November is National Hospice Month, a time to reach out to our community to raise awareness about the compassionate care that hospice and palliative care provide.  One of the most important messages to help people understand is that hospice care helps patients and families focus on living.

The Horn Hospice team provides expert medical care to keep patients comfortable and able to enjoy time with loved ones. The hospice team answers questions, offers advice on what to expect, and helps families with the duties of being a caregiver. The team also provides emotional and spiritual support for the entire family.

Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid , and by most insurance plans and HMOs. Hospice care is provided in the home, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and long term care centers.  It is available to people of all ages, with any illness.  Horn Hospice professionals and their trained volunteers will ask you what’s important and listen to what you say; they make your wishes a priority.

The Horn Hospice Team is made up of physicians, nurses with over 50 years of nursing experience, aides and homemakers, massage therapists, a wound consultant, chaplain and 16 trained volunteers.

If you or a loved one is facing a serious or life-limiting illness, the time to find out more about hospice and palliative care is right now.  For more information, contact Horn Hospice at 712.364.7310.

Horn Memorial Hospital and Northwest Iowa Area Health Education Center Impacting the Wellness of Military Families: Continuing Education Opportunity

Ida Grove, IA – October, 2012 – Horn Memorial Hospital, in partnership with Northwest Iowa Area Health Education Center (AHEC), will host a “Behavioral and Mental Health of Veterans and Service Members” continuing education program featuring speakers from the local Veterans Administration, Iowa Army National Guard and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Keynote speaker, CPT Dan Grinstead, has recently been featured on The Daily Nightly, NBC News and The Huffington Post highlighting his personal story as a social worker to enlist in the Iowa Army National Guard at age 59, deploy to Afghanistan, and return home helping soldiers become citizens again.

“Behavioral and Mental Health of Veterans and Service Members” is part of an important national health workforce training initiative because more than 50% of returning veterans, service members, and their families receive health care from civilian providers. This program will be offered on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, IA. It is designed to address military culture and increase knowledge/improve practice for civilian healthcare professionals regarding behavioral and mental health of veterans and service members.

Data reported in 2007 by the Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health indicate that 38% of Soldiers and 31% of Marines report psychological symptoms after returning from deployment. Among members of the National Guard, the figure rises to 49%. Iowa has deployed over 2,800 men and women who are mostly National Guard members and part of our rural Iowa communities. Those with repeat deployments, a growing cohort, have significantly higher rates of symptoms.

Multiple deployments, combat injuries, and the challenges of re-integration can have far-reaching effects on not only the troops and their families, but also upon America’s communities as well. It is important that providers know and understand the impact of veteran and service members experiences during deployment and when re-integrating into routine life situations.

Physicians, healthcare professionals, nurses, social workers, counselors, EMS personnel, case workers, crisis intervention specialists, physical and occupational therapists, clergy, and other interested professionals are encouraged to attend.

No registration fee is required thanks to the generous sponsorship provided by the Ida County Veterans Affairs.  Handout materials and continuing education (CEUs) for Nursing and EMTs will be provided.

Pre-registration is required for this event. Contacting Becky Wuebker, Social Worker, at Horn Memorial Hospital at (712) 364-3311 or rwuebker@hornmemorialhospital.org. Please provide name, occupation, contact information and license number, if applicable, when registering.

HMH to Provide MONTHLY Wellness Screenings to Community

Horn Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce a new service to the community.  The Laboratory Department of the hospital is changing things up by offering a new MONTHLY Wellness Screening to be held the FIRST TUESDAY of each month.

“I know how hectic schedules can get. By providing a wellness screening monthly rather than just once a year during Hospital Week, we hope to meet the needs of more of our patients and ultimately promote health and wellness throughout the community,” comments Liz Anderson, Laboratory Director.

The screening will include numerous blood tests including a complete blood count, blood sugar, kidney function, liver function, thyroid function, cholesterol, electrolytes, and PSA.  Patients can choose any one or all of the tests available.  This service is not billed to insurance, so patients will need to pay at the time of service.  A 12-hour fast is required and the screenings are conveniently done by appointment only, so patients can request a time that works within their busy schedule.  Although a doctor’s order IS NOT needed, all results will be shared with both the patient and his/her healthcare provider.  Schedule your appointment today for the first Wellness Screening date set for Tuesday, November 6th by calling Liz Anderson at 712.364.7255 or 712.364.3311.

HMH Re-certified as a Community (Level IV) Trauma Care Facility

Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for persons in Iowa from 1 to 44 years of age and is often the most common cause of hospitalization.  The cost of injuries is staggering, costing billions of dollars in health-care and social support services.  An estimated 30,000 Iowans are rushed each year to hospitals for emergency evaluation and treatment due to injury.  This costs Iowans in increased medical expense and lost time in work and wages.
The 1995 state legislative session established the Iowa Trauma Care System Development Act.  It designated the Iowa Department of Public Health through its Bureau of Emergency Medical Services as the lead agency for trauma care system development and implementation.  Iowa's trauma system went "on-line" January 1, 2001.
The goal of Iowa's trauma system is to match the injured patient's needs to existing resources so optimal and cost-effective care is achieved.  A systems approach to trauma care involves the collaboration of health-care providers across the continuum of care extending from prevention, to acute care, through rehabilitation.  This system approach will reduce costs, disability, and death associated with traumatic injury.  All hospitals, transporting ambulance service programs, and rehabilitation centers are participating in Iowa's trauma system, which makes it an all-inclusive system.
Horn Memorial Hospital has successfully completed the categorization and re-verification process to be re-certified as a Community (Level IV) Trauma Care Facility.  Hospitals must re-apply every three years to participate in Iowa's trauma system, and based on availability of resources, they are classified into four areas including:

Resource Trauma Care Facilities - Primarily located in urban areas with resources to provide all definitive surgical and critical care for trauma patients.  Resource trauma care facilities also have extensive research capabilities.

Regional Trauma Care Facilities - Primarily located in urban areas with resources to provide surgical and critical care for trauma patients.  Regional trauma care facilities may transfer patients to resource trauma care facilities for specialized care such as burns.

Area Trauma Care Facilities - May be located in rural or urban areas and have the resources to provide initial stabilization for all trauma patients and may provide surgical and/or critical care for trauma patients when appropriate.  If specialty surgical intervention is necessary or if specialized care is needed, patients may be transferred to a resource or regional trauma care facility.

Community Trauma Care Facilities - Most often located in rural areas and have the resources to provide initial stabilization for all trauma patients while preparing the patient for transfer when appropriate.  If surgical and/or critical care intervention is necessary the patient may be transferred to an area, regional, or resource trauma care facility.  Some community trauma care facilities have surgical capabilities.

Iowa's trauma system is designed to assure that all people throughout the state have access to an organized delivery system for trauma care and that critically injured patients are rapidly stabilized and provided with the appropriate resources necessary to care for their injuries. Iowa's trauma care system is an "all-inclusive" system involving out-of-hospital emergency medical services (EMS) providers and hospital medical providers throughout the state.  The system also assists ambulance service programs in determining appropriate trauma care facility destination based upon the patient's condition and travel time.
Leading the Horn Memorial Hospital categorization and re-verification process was Jill Webb, BSN, RN, TNCC-I, Trauma Nurse Coordinator.

Horn Promotes Patient Safety through the “Ask Me 3” Program

Look for these cards in your
Provider's Office or Patient Room
Horn Memorial Hospital and Horn Physicians Clinic are actively practicing and promoting the education program “Ask Me 3™” to improve the safety of patients.  Ask Me 3™ is a patient education program designed to promote communication between health care providers and patients in order to improve health outcomes. The program encourages patients to understand the answers to three questions:
  1. What is my main problem?
  2. What do I need to do?
  3. Why is it important for me to do this?
“We are encouraging patients to ask their providers these three simple but essential questions in every health care interaction. Likewise, providers should always encourage their patients to understand the answers to these three questions,” comments Heather Gann, Quality Services Director.  “Studies show that people who understand health instructions make fewer mistakes when they take their medicine or prepare for a medical procedure. They may also get well sooner or be able to better manage a chronic health condition,” states Gann.

Take an active role in your health.

Ask questions, you won’t regret it.

The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care.

A state-by-state summary of the latest HCAHPS results shows Iowa tied for first with two other states for overall hospital rating.  Nearly three out four patients gave Iowa hospitals the highest possible rating (either a “9” or “10” on a 10-point scale).  Kansas and Nebraska hospitals received the same overall score.

In addition to giving an overall rating, surveyed patients also responded to nine other aspects of their hospital experience, including communication with physicians and nurses, responsiveness of the hospital staff, cleanliness, quietness, pain management, communication about medicine and discharge information.  In nine out of these 10 ratings, Iowa’s score was no lower than fifth-highest (Iowa ranked eighth for hospital quietness).

“The HCAHPS results show that it is a priority at Iowa hospitals to make every patient comfortable and well informed about their care,” said Kirk Norris, president and CEO of the Iowa Hospital Association.  “A positive, supportive environment for patients is vital to the high-quality care that is found throughout Iowa hospitals.”

Hospitals that are paid by Medicare under the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) are required to participate in the HCAHPS survey.  Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), which are small facilities and not part of IPPS, have the option of participating.  Of Iowa’s 118 hospitals, 72 participate in HCAHPS and several of those are among the state’s 82 CAHs.

The most current HCAHPS Survey is based on patients discharged between July 2010 and June 2011.  The first public reporting of HCAHPS results in March 2008 included 2,521 hospitals and 1.1 million completed surveys; the spring 2012 public reporting entailed 3,851 hospitals and 2.8 million completed surveys.

HCAHPS data is used on the federal Hospital Compare website (http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov/), where consumers can see information about hospital quality and compare results for individual hospitals.

The Iowa Hospital Association is a voluntary membership organization representing hospital and health system interests to business, government and consumer audiences.  All of Iowa’s 118 community hospitals are IHA members.

Horn Promotes SERVICE EXCELLENCE

Present from left: Megan Schilling, Jean Whiteing
Linda Ausborn, Crystal Endrulat, and Tina Wellendorf

At Horn Memorial Hospital Service Excellence is about going beyond the basics of your job description to better serve patients and staff.  It isn’t just about your job, but about your attitude and how you represent the hospital and your community. The Service Excellence Committee provides opportunities for staff to do just that.

As a spring project, Service Excellence challenged staff to give back to the community by hosting a hospital-wide food drive for Mid Sioux. The committee set a goal of 200 items and was pleased with the outpouring of support having surpassed this goal by more than 50 items! In addition, a “Pay it Forward” program among staff has also been implemented. Through “Pay it Forward”, staff is encouraged to perform random acts of kindness and try to make someone else’s day a little brighter by doing something unexpected.

“’Pay it Forward’ gives people the opportunity to make someone else’s day brighter. Random acts of kindness don’t have to be extravagant or time-consuming, but can be something small or thoughtful. We hope that this will catch on among staff members and possibly even spread into the community.” said Megan Schilling, leader of the Service Excellence Committee.

The Service Excellence Committee also participates in a bi-annual Adopt-a-Highway Roadside Cleanup as a way to give back to the community. Horn’s goal through Service Excellence is to make an impact one small measure at a time.

“We are always trying to implement more ways for staff to work as a team and serve patients and our community beyond what is expected of them. We hope to use our efforts this spring as a starting point for future projects.” comments Megan Schilling.
