Foot Care Clincs Assist Seniors

Horn Memorial Community Health Services provides foot care clinics to persons who may have problems performing this care themselves due to visual or other physical limitations.  At the clinics, a registered nurse will soak and inspect the feet; clean, trim and file toenails; lotion the feet and provide education.  “One of the main goals of this service is to reduce preventable foot health problems,” states Erin Dausel, Community Health Nurse. “Better foot care, may prevent many foot problems.  If we see a person with foot problems, we refer them to their healthcare provider or a podiatrist.”

The clinics are provided every other month in Holstein and Ida Grove by appointment only.   “We find that nail care every two months is usually sufficient for most individuals,” states Patti Andrews, Community Health Nurse.

There is a suggested donation of $25.00 for those able to pay; however, no one will be refused service if unable to contribute.  This clinic is funded in part by a grant from the Iowa Department of Public Health and county funds.  To schedule an appointment or if you have any questions, please call Horn Memorial Community Health at 712.364.7311.

Horn Memorial Plans for Girlfriend’s Getaway

Horn Memorial Hospital is planning for its 9th Annual Girlfriends Getaway set for Wednesday, April 24th from 5-8 p.m. at the Ida Grove Skate Palace.  This women’s health event is centered on the theme “wellness that fits”.  Participants are encouraged to get active and learn about a variety of exercises offered at our area rec centers.  Exercises featured will be 10-minute sessions on zumba, step aerobics, tabata and yoga.  Wear your comfy/workout clothes and actively participate, or just stand back and learn more about these trending activities.

One of the draws to this annual event is the variety of vendors and health education geared toward women.  Seventeen vendors have already signed up and registrations continue to trickle in!  Horn Memorial staff will provide free blood pressure and blood sugar checks, women’s health and wellness education, as well as coffee samples from The 10th Cup!  The Odebolt Bowling Alley will cater a variety of appetizers and the Skate Palace will provide the cash bar!

Tickets for the event are $10 each and can be purchased at Horn Memorial Hospital, Horn Physicians Clinic, or at the door.  Pre-sale ticket purchases are appreciated so we have a better idea of how much food to plan for.  Bring your girlfriends for an evening out!  Shop, eat, drink, exercise and learn…in whatever order you choose!

Horn’s Pulmonary Rehab Department Receives Donation

Horn Memorial Hospital’s (HMH) Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program makes a difference in the lives of many patients with chronic respiratory diseases.  The various education and training provided in this specialized department benefits patients by reducing symptoms, optimizing functional status, and increasing their ability to maintain daily activities.

As a long-time recipient of these services, Jim Lancaster knew all too well the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation.  Jim formed a special relationship with the nurses in the Pulmonary Department as well as many other hospital staff.  His positive attitude and friendly greetings will be remembered for many years to come.  In appreciation of the services provided by HMH Pulmonary Rehab, Jean Lancaster recently donated a specialized oximetry system in memory of her late husband, Jim.  This wireless transmitter measures the oxygen in the blood, transmits the patient’s heart rate, and remotely displays the information on a central telemetry station.

Jean Cipperley, RN, BSN, CDE, Health Promotions Director, comments, “For many of our patients, Pulmonary Rehab stabilizes their symptoms and allows them to increase their activity level.  Because our Pulmonary Rehab patients are often in our program for an extended period of time, we are able to form special relationships with them as we did with Jim.  It is often like caring for a member of our own family; which coincides with the overall kind of care Horn is known for.”

Jean Cipperley, Kathy Henrich, and Darnell Dennehey are the three specially trained nurses who provide HMH’s Pulmonary Rehab care.
