Horn Memorial Foundation Plans for the 13th Annual Fall Festival

The Horn Memorial Hospital Foundation is planning its 13th Annual Festival set for Friday, November 2nd at the Ida Grove Skate Palace. This festive evening will include cocktails, dinner, auctions, and entertainment!

The Foundation Board has recently set a new goal to raise the $156,000 needed to replace the laboratory’s Chemistry Analyzer. This instrument performs the majority of the lab tests ordered from Horn Memorial Hospital, Horn Physicians Clinics, several outpatient clinic providers, and many area nursing homes. In short, this instrument helps the hospital service MANY community members. With the new Chemistry Analyzer, patients will benefit from faster turnaround times, which means less waiting for our patients, and less blood work sent to a reference lab.

Sarah Harm, Public Relations Director comments, “Horn Memorial strives to provide a large variety of services right here in our local community. The new Chemistry Analyzer is just another way for us to allow patients the opportunity to receive medical services without driving out of town. The annual Foundation Festival is a community-supported tradition that we hope to continue for many years to come.”

This year’s theme, “Doo Wop, Lab Hop”, will reflect the atmosphere for the evening’s entertainment, Richie Lee and the Fabulous 50’s. Community members will once again decorate tables, and as many of you know, browsing the tables before the dinner is something to see!

Horn Memorial Hospital and Northwest Iowa Area Health Education Center Impacting the Wellness of Military Families: Continuing Education Opportunity

Ida Grove, IA – October, 2012 – Horn Memorial Hospital, in partnership with Northwest Iowa Area Health Education Center (AHEC), will host a “Behavioral and Mental Health of Veterans and Service Members” continuing education program featuring speakers from the local Veterans Administration, Iowa Army National Guard and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Keynote speaker, CPT Dan Grinstead, has recently been featured on The Daily Nightly, NBC News and The Huffington Post highlighting his personal story as a social worker to enlist in the Iowa Army National Guard at age 59, deploy to Afghanistan, and return home helping soldiers become citizens again.

“Behavioral and Mental Health of Veterans and Service Members” is part of an important national health workforce training initiative because more than 50% of returning veterans, service members, and their families receive health care from civilian providers. This program will be offered on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, IA. It is designed to address military culture and increase knowledge/improve practice for civilian healthcare professionals regarding behavioral and mental health of veterans and service members.

Data reported in 2007 by the Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health indicate that 38% of Soldiers and 31% of Marines report psychological symptoms after returning from deployment. Among members of the National Guard, the figure rises to 49%. Iowa has deployed over 2,800 men and women who are mostly National Guard members and part of our rural Iowa communities. Those with repeat deployments, a growing cohort, have significantly higher rates of symptoms.

Multiple deployments, combat injuries, and the challenges of re-integration can have far-reaching effects on not only the troops and their families, but also upon America’s communities as well. It is important that providers know and understand the impact of veteran and service members experiences during deployment and when re-integrating into routine life situations.

Physicians, healthcare professionals, nurses, social workers, counselors, EMS personnel, case workers, crisis intervention specialists, physical and occupational therapists, clergy, and other interested professionals are encouraged to attend.

No registration fee is required thanks to the generous sponsorship provided by the Ida County Veterans Affairs.  Handout materials and continuing education (CEUs) for Nursing and EMTs will be provided.

Pre-registration is required for this event. Contacting Becky Wuebker, Social Worker, at Horn Memorial Hospital at (712) 364-3311 or rwuebker@hornmemorialhospital.org. Please provide name, occupation, contact information and license number, if applicable, when registering.

HMH to Provide MONTHLY Wellness Screenings to Community

Horn Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce a new service to the community.  The Laboratory Department of the hospital is changing things up by offering a new MONTHLY Wellness Screening to be held the FIRST TUESDAY of each month.

“I know how hectic schedules can get. By providing a wellness screening monthly rather than just once a year during Hospital Week, we hope to meet the needs of more of our patients and ultimately promote health and wellness throughout the community,” comments Liz Anderson, Laboratory Director.

The screening will include numerous blood tests including a complete blood count, blood sugar, kidney function, liver function, thyroid function, cholesterol, electrolytes, and PSA.  Patients can choose any one or all of the tests available.  This service is not billed to insurance, so patients will need to pay at the time of service.  A 12-hour fast is required and the screenings are conveniently done by appointment only, so patients can request a time that works within their busy schedule.  Although a doctor’s order IS NOT needed, all results will be shared with both the patient and his/her healthcare provider.  Schedule your appointment today for the first Wellness Screening date set for Tuesday, November 6th by calling Liz Anderson at 712.364.7255 or 712.364.3311.

HMH Re-certified as a Community (Level IV) Trauma Care Facility

Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for persons in Iowa from 1 to 44 years of age and is often the most common cause of hospitalization.  The cost of injuries is staggering, costing billions of dollars in health-care and social support services.  An estimated 30,000 Iowans are rushed each year to hospitals for emergency evaluation and treatment due to injury.  This costs Iowans in increased medical expense and lost time in work and wages.
The 1995 state legislative session established the Iowa Trauma Care System Development Act.  It designated the Iowa Department of Public Health through its Bureau of Emergency Medical Services as the lead agency for trauma care system development and implementation.  Iowa's trauma system went "on-line" January 1, 2001.
The goal of Iowa's trauma system is to match the injured patient's needs to existing resources so optimal and cost-effective care is achieved.  A systems approach to trauma care involves the collaboration of health-care providers across the continuum of care extending from prevention, to acute care, through rehabilitation.  This system approach will reduce costs, disability, and death associated with traumatic injury.  All hospitals, transporting ambulance service programs, and rehabilitation centers are participating in Iowa's trauma system, which makes it an all-inclusive system.
Horn Memorial Hospital has successfully completed the categorization and re-verification process to be re-certified as a Community (Level IV) Trauma Care Facility.  Hospitals must re-apply every three years to participate in Iowa's trauma system, and based on availability of resources, they are classified into four areas including:

Resource Trauma Care Facilities - Primarily located in urban areas with resources to provide all definitive surgical and critical care for trauma patients.  Resource trauma care facilities also have extensive research capabilities.

Regional Trauma Care Facilities - Primarily located in urban areas with resources to provide surgical and critical care for trauma patients.  Regional trauma care facilities may transfer patients to resource trauma care facilities for specialized care such as burns.

Area Trauma Care Facilities - May be located in rural or urban areas and have the resources to provide initial stabilization for all trauma patients and may provide surgical and/or critical care for trauma patients when appropriate.  If specialty surgical intervention is necessary or if specialized care is needed, patients may be transferred to a resource or regional trauma care facility.

Community Trauma Care Facilities - Most often located in rural areas and have the resources to provide initial stabilization for all trauma patients while preparing the patient for transfer when appropriate.  If surgical and/or critical care intervention is necessary the patient may be transferred to an area, regional, or resource trauma care facility.  Some community trauma care facilities have surgical capabilities.

Iowa's trauma system is designed to assure that all people throughout the state have access to an organized delivery system for trauma care and that critically injured patients are rapidly stabilized and provided with the appropriate resources necessary to care for their injuries. Iowa's trauma care system is an "all-inclusive" system involving out-of-hospital emergency medical services (EMS) providers and hospital medical providers throughout the state.  The system also assists ambulance service programs in determining appropriate trauma care facility destination based upon the patient's condition and travel time.
Leading the Horn Memorial Hospital categorization and re-verification process was Jill Webb, BSN, RN, TNCC-I, Trauma Nurse Coordinator.

HMH Staff Participate in the "Healthiest State Wa1k"

The HMH Wellness Committee took the initiative to organize and motivate staff to participate in this year’s “Healthiest State Wa1k” on Wednesday, October 3rd.  Over 60 employees took their break and made the trek from the HMH parking lot to the Ida Grove Swimming Pool and back, each logging 1 mile “for the health of it”!  This was also a great kick off to the hospital’s revived employee wellness program that began on October 1st.
