New Horn Physicians Clinic-Mapleton Set to Open January 4th, 2016

Horn Physicians Clinic–Mapleton is set to open on Monday, January 4, 2016 at its new location: 520 Main Street.  The new corner location at 6th and Main Street greatly improves space for patients and staff by more than doubling the square footage and adding additional treatment rooms.  Additional features include larger exam rooms, on-site x-ray services, convenient street parking, and improved ambulance access.  The clinic will continue operating as a Certified Rural Health Clinic, and is an affiliate of Horn Memorial Hospital located in Ida Grove, Iowa.  Michelle Weber, Director of Clinics, serves as Administrative Director of all three clinics operated by Horn Memorial: HPC-Mapleton, HPC-Odebolt, and HPC-Ida Grove.

Horn Physicians Clinic opened a Mapleton location in February of 2011 at 412 Main Street.  This clinic served its purpose well the past four years, allowing patients improved access to local healthcare.  The space, however, became too small as the clinic grew and became busier.  The new location at 6th and Main was identified about a year ago and construction began in April of this year.
Regular providers at the clinic include Curtis Hesse, DO, Jackie Crampton, ARNP, and Michele Koerner, ARNP.  Appointments can be made by calling 712-881-4676.  Regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

In preparation for the move, the current clinic location at 412 Main Street will be closed Wednesday, December 30st and Thursday, December 31st.  The clinic will reopen for business at the new location Monday, January 4th.

Horn Memorial Community Health Offers Flu Clinics

Now is the time to prepare for the flu season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.  Horn Memorial Community Health will be offering Community flu shots clinics:

  • Wednesday, October 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Ida Grove Community Hall
  • Thursday, October 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Battle Creek Community Center
  • Friday, October 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Galva at The Meeting Place
  • Friday, October 9 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Holstein Methodist Church
  • Thursday, October 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Arthur Evangelical Free Youth Building

Clinics are available for individuals 19 years and older.  A Medicare card or Medicare Advantage Plan card is required.   Private pay shots are $31.00.  If you are homebound and would like to receive the flu shot, please call Horn Memorial Community Health at 364-7311.
Flu shots may fall under your health insurance coverage.  Check your benefits to see if flu shots are covered.  If you're still not sure, just call the Customer Service number on the back of your ID card and they will be happy to help.  Call your doctor and schedule an appointment or visit a participating pharmacy.  While many pharmacies will accept your coverage, be sure to ask before you get your flu shot.

The flu is different from a cold.  Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death.  The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms: fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue and though more common in children than adults vomiting and diarrhea.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends annual vaccination for all people ages 6 months and older who do not have a contraindication to the vaccine.

Some people refuse influenza vaccination because they believe they “got the flu” after receiving the vaccine in the past.  There are several reasons why this misconception persists: (1) Less than 1% of people who are vaccinated with the injectable vaccine develop flu-like symptoms, such as mild fever and muscle aches, after vaccination. These side effects are not the same as having influenza, but people confuse the symptoms. (2) Protective immunity doesn't develop until 1–2 weeks after vaccination. Some people who get vaccinated may get influenza shortly afterward. They develop influenza because they were exposed to someone with the virus before they became immune. It is not the result of the vaccination. (3) To many people "the flu" is any illness with fever and cold symptoms. If they get any viral illness, they may blame it on the flu shot or think they got "the flu" despite being vaccinated. Influenza vaccine only protects against certain influenza viruses, not all viruses. (4) The influenza vaccine is not 100% effective, especially in older persons.

It is especially important to vaccinate pregnant women because of their increased risk for influenza-related complications. Vaccination can occur in any trimester, including the first. Only inactivated vaccine should be given to pregnant women. In addition, breastfeeding is not a contraindication for routine vaccination.

People with cancer or a history of cancer should receive the seasonal flu shot.  Living with cancer increases your risk for complications from influenza. If a person has cancer now or has had cancer in the past, they are at higher risk for complications from the seasonal flu.  People who live with or care for cancer patients and survivors also should be vaccinated.

Persons who have experienced a severe allergic reaction to a prior dose of influenza vaccine, or who are known to have a severe allergy to a vaccine component should not be vaccinated. Vaccination should be deferred for a person with moderate or severe acute illness until his/her condition improves.
While the flu vaccine is the best defense against getting influenza, it’s also important to take personal actions to help prevent the spread of illness.  Remember the 3Cs: Cover your coughs and sneezes; Clean your hands frequently; and Contain germs by staying home when ill.

Ida County Healthcare Coalition Donates AEDs to Sheriff’s Department

The Ida County Healthcare Coalition, consisting of Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida County Public Health, and the Ida County Emergency Manager, presented the AEDs to the Sherriff’s Department last week.
Present in the photo back row:  Fred Anderson, Kirk Kinnaman, and Ed Sohm  Front Row:  Sheriff Wade Harriman,
Jo Hayes and Chris Nichols

The Ida County Healthcare Coalition recently donated nine automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the Ida County Sheriff’s Department.  Dr. Curtis Hesse, a physician employed by Horn Memorial Hospital and the Medical Director for the Ida Grove Ambulance, was familiar with a similar program in other counties and recognized that the Sheriff and deputies are often the first responders on the scene where use of an AED can mean the difference between life and death.
Dr. Hesse approached Horn Memorial to ask if funding was available to provide AEDs for the Sheriff’s Department.  The hospital pursued this idea and, through the Ida County Healthcare Coalition, was able to designate money from a State grant for Hospital and Public Health Preparedness to purchase the AEDs.  The grant money made it possible to purchase nine (9) brand new AEDs totaling just under $14,000.

Chris Nichols, Horn Memorial Hospital CEO, stated, “This donation reflects great coordination and cooperation across the various healthcare entities in our county.  It started with a question by our own Dr. Hesse, and ended with a solution that benefits all parties, mainly the residents of Ida County.  I’m glad that the hospital could play a role to facilitate this positive step in the health of our communities.”

According to the American Heart Association, 23% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests are "shockable" arrhythmias, or those that respond to a shock from an AED, making AEDs in public places highly valuable.  The use of an AED can increase the chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest by 70%.   Communities with comprehensive AED programs that include CPR and AED training for rescuers have achieved survival rates of nearly 40% for cardiac arrest victims.

Sheriff Harriman commented, “These AEDs will allow our deputies, who many times are the first on the scene, to more quickly address the needs of a cardiac patient.  I want to thank the Ida County Healthcare Coalition for applying for the grant that allowed the Sheriff’s Office to receive AEDs to put in all of our patrol vehicles.”

Horn’s “Mock Up” Exercise Offers Staff Participation in the Inpatient Design

Horn Memorial Hospital kicked off the Design Phase for possible future construction of a new Inpatient Unit by building actual-size “mock ups” of the Unit for staff to see.  Over 3,000 pounds of cardboard was brought into the old Lewis Drug building where patient rooms, a nursing station, offices, and storage areas were built to “life-size” with cardboard.  This 2-day exercise allowed staff to give valuable input to make the unit as efficient and patient-centered as possible.

Chris Nichols, CEO stated, “We started this process with ideas and concepts, and we ended with a very detailed layout of the patient rooms and offices.  It was incredible to see our staff design the details and watch them modify and build it with cardboard as we went along.  We were able to go pretty deep into the design because of such great staff participation.”

The Design Phase is expected to be completed later this year, giving the HMH Board of Trustees a detailed plan to consider as they determine the next step.

Celebrating Hospice Volunteers

During National Volunteer Week, Horn Hospice Honors those who Give Selflessly to Others

Over 40 years ago, the U.S. hospice movement was founded by dedicated volunteers who wanted to bring compassion and care to people at life’s end. This commitment to volunteering among our nation’s hospices continues to be a foundation of hospice care.

During National Volunteer Week, April 12-18, Horn Hospice is celebrating the many gifts of its dedicated volunteers from our community who provide support, companionship and dignity to patients and family caregivers facing serious and life-limiting illness.

Horn Hospice’s 13 volunteers provided 240 hours in the past year to help Horn Hospice care for patients and families in the community.

Hospice volunteers often serve patients and families at the bedside but they also assist in the office, help raise awareness, contribute to educational programs, and provide fundraising support and more.

The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization reports that there are an estimated 355,000 trained hospice volunteers providing more than 16 million hours of service to hospice programs each year.

An estimated 1.6 million patients in the U.S. are cared for by hospice every year.

Hospice volunteers help the people they serve live every moment of life to the fullest and enable the organizations they work with to achieve their mission in the community. Most hospice volunteers choose to give their time helping others because of their own experience with the compassionate care hospice provided to a dying loved one.

It is federally mandated under Medicare that five percent of all patient care hours be provided by trained volunteers reflecting the vital role that volunteers play in the provision of care.

For those interested in learning more about hospice or volunteer opportunities, please Horn Hospice at 712.364.7311.

Wear Red Day – Friday, February 6th - Help Raise Awareness

Although significant progress has been made in increasing awareness among women that heart disease is their #1 killer, most women fail to make the connection between heart disease risk factors and their personal risk of developing the disease. This disease is largely preventable, but kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. Join The Heart Truth campaign on Friday, February 6 — National Wear Red Day—to help spread the message that "Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear, It's the #1 Killer of Women.®"
The Heart Truth created and introduced the Red DressSM as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wake-up call to American women.  The Red Dress® reminds women of the need to protect their heart health, and inspires them to take action. On National Wear Red Day, wear a red dress, red shirt, or red tie to show your support for women and heart disease awareness.
While heart disease risk begins to rise in middle age, heart disease develops over time and can start at a young age, even in the teen years. It's never too early, or too late, to take action to prevent and control the risk factors for heart disease. The Heart Truth is building awareness of women's heart disease and empowering women to reduce and prevent their risk. It is reaching women with important heart health messages in community settings through a diverse network of national and grassroots partner organizations.
